GROUP FUSION -REFLECTION

Fusion group
Zine fusion was exciting and the enthusiasm was fascinating. The group that I was in was very co-operative, and we worked as a team at all times. Ideas came from everyone, from the layout, to the contend and the design.

There is power in helping one another understand they played a very critical role in the success of a zone. But it has to be real, it cannot simply be an empty promise made at the daily meeting or some lofty words buried deep in the group. It has to be part of the zine - felt, understood and acted upon by those who get it, who like and want to play an active part in it. Facing it we all want to feel like we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves.
We felt that we need each other in order to complete the group's task, that is, we sink or swim together. Positive interdependence was built into the task by jigsawing information, by limiting materials, by having a single team product, through team roles or by randomly selecting one group mate to do something or conduct an interview. It was built into a reward structure by assigning team points based on team averages, on members reaching a predetermined criterion, or on team improvement rather than outright grades.

We felt that they are each accountable for helping to complete the task and for mastering material. We knew that a hitchhiker situation will not be productive. Ways to build in individual accountability included: us take individual questions; each group mate is responsible for a specific portion of the task; each must be able to summaries another's ideas; any of us may be called on at random to answer for the team.

Processing means giving one another the time and procedures to analyze how well the group is functioning and how well are we using the necessary collaborative skills. Processing was individual, team-wide, or at the whole collaborative group level. Examples include: How well did I listen? Did we take turns and include everyone? How could we have coached each other better? How can the class function more smoothly?
The success of the zine was made by understanding our capabilities and how we are well at doing some of the things. Also giving a chance to those who are not good at some things to try them so we can all share equal responsibilities and capabilities. With the help of cutting and pasting we had everyone working because all of us can paste and cut. It was easy working with the group dynamics given because we had a deadline and we made it in time.
Group fusion had a great time working and we never had fights because everyone knew their role and had their job done in time. Time was our “Boss” because if you did not submit in time you would be panelized, in something we had discussed as a group and it worked.
